STATE OUTREACH MATERIALS

California | Minnesota | New York

CALIFORNIA

California Family Health Council (CFHC)

The focus of the Title X funded Emergency Contraceptive (EC) Initiative is to expand the network of clinics and medical practices that provide EC by outreaching to both providers and patients. The EC Initiative began as a pilot project in 2001 with outreach to Latino communities in Los Angeles County, targeting areas with population densities of 70% and above. In 2002, the project was expanded to northern California and other areas of southern California not identified in the pilot project.

EC specialists send letters to community providers with an invitation to receive EC resources and technical assistance. The EC specialists follow up with a site visit, and supply EC Provider Kits containing client education and outreach materials, information on billing procedures, discussion of legal issues, etc.

Spring 2003, CFHC’s EC Initiative conducted a media campaign on Los Angeles Public Buses to promote EC with a bus poster in English (PDF-432K) and Spanish (PDF-432K) and a postcard in English (PDF-92K) and Spanish (PDF-96K) , artwork selected from Self Help Graphics Gallery in Los Angeles.

In 2004, CFHC launched an innovative billboard campaign with accompanying wallet cards. The key strategy is to promote “being prepared the morning after.” One hundred billboards in Southern California and fifty in Northern California urge callers to find out how to get EC FREE and FAST in advance of an emergency.

On Valentine’s Day 2005, also known as National Condom Day, CFHC launched it s second EC community billboard campaign in English (PDF-268K) and Spanish (PDF-144K). What better way to send the message:  EC should be just as accessible as condoms. Postcards with the same visual, posing the question Worried? were also developed in English (PDF-188K) and Spanish (PDF-272K) to compliment the campaign.

Planned Parenthood of Golden Gate (PPGG)

Since 2001, PPGG has planned an annual “Free EC Day” to raise awareness of EC. At each “Free EC Day” women can walk into any one of PPGG's health centers, and after meeting certain health criteria, walk out with EC.

PPGG has promoted “Free EC Day” with ads (PDF-476K) in college newspapers, a media alert (DOC-52K) to local press outlets, calendar listings (DOC-52K) to local print publications, a radio appearance (DOC-52K), and promotion in PPGG’s health centers. PPGG’s first EC Day (2002) garnered media attention from all network television stations in the San Francisco Bay Area, and from the 2 largest print publications in the region. Over 110 women came into PPGG health centers to get “EC to Go” in 2002. PPGG’s second EC Day (2003) was equally successful, garnering remarkable press attention and a large number of women coming in for EC.

Additionally PPGG has created a line of EC materials for consumers including: EC Brochure in English (PDF-20K) and Spanish (PDF-20K), and an EC magnet (PDF-80K).

Population Services International (PSI)

PSI piloted EC activities in Sacramento, California with the Emergency Contraception Promotion Project (ECPP). This pilot project improved young women’s access to EC by mobilizing key community members around EC, training over 700 health care providers to better provide EC, and educating women about EC through a mass media and educational campaign called Accidents Happen, Pregnancy Doesn’t Have To: wallet cards (PDF-292K), posters in English (PDF-432K) and Spanish (PDF-472K), billboards in English (PDF-220K) and Spanish (PDF-244K), radio ads in both English and Spanish (Call to Clinic 1: English-30 sec., Spanish-30sec.; Call to Clinic 2: English-60 sec., Spanish-60 sec.; Call to Clinic 3: English-30sec., English-60 sec.). © PSI. These materials can only be used with permission from PSI.

Population Services International (PSI) is currently coordinating advocates and partners in California to improve teen access EC in health care facilities. They developed an advocacy tool kit — including a 10 minute video (low-bandwidth movie preview-864K, high-bandwidth movie preview-3.2MB) — and a provider resource guide including information, resources, and sample protocols to enhance EC service delivery. PSI staff and partners provide on-site EC assistance to health providers around California.

For more information or to receive a copy of the EC advocacy video contact PSI at psisac@pacbell.net or 916.444.1254.

NATIONAL/INTERNATIONAL OUTREACH MATERIALS

Abortion Access Project (AAP)

The Abortion Access Project (AAP) created wallet sized, "What's the Difference?" cards in nine languages, including English (PDF-416K) and Spanish (PDF-416K) . These cards highlight the differences between EC and the medical abortion pill. These cards have been used by medical professionals in educating their patients and national and state EC educational outreach campaigns. AAP offers the camera-ready artwork free of charge which can be easily duplicated. The recipient shall not alter the card in any manner, except to add local contact information, without obtaining prior written permission from AAP.

For more information or additional languages, contact info@abortionaccess.org or visit www.abortionaccess.org.

Back Up Your Birth Control (BUYBC)

The Back Up Your Birth Control campaign seeks to raise EC awareness and to encourage advance prescription through grassroots organizing, provider and public education, and policy debates. The collective momentum of more than 100 national and local medical and public health organizations has helped spark action in the examination room, the pharmacy, the media, and the state house. The “Campaign Tool Kit,” developed by the Reproductive Health Technologies Project and now managed by the Institute for Reproductive Health Access, enables advocates to raise awareness of EC and improve access with clear, consistent messages, creative collateral materials, and grassroots activism. The kit, available on the campaign website www.backupyourbirthcontrol.org, includes outreach materials in English and Spanish, fact sheets, talking points, sample letters to Members of Congress regarding EC legislation, as well as suggested activities for activists, providers, and college students. A postcard (PDF-100K) to conduct outreach to pharmacists was developed for the 2005 campaign.

For more information, please contact Cristina Tenuta at ctenuta@prochoiceny.org.

PATH

To encourage and facilitate efforts to expand access to emergency contraception, the Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH) works to share up-to-date, evidence-based information through seminars and workshops, as well as by making its program materials available in several ?tool kits,? such as the Emergency Contraception Diverse Audiences Toolkit, created for the Washington State project that helped health and social service providers integrate EC into their programs. Another resource is ?Tools for Expanding EC Pill Access,? which PATH developed for states interested in promoting EC collaborative drug therapy agreements for pharmacy provision of EC services. In late 2003 and early 2004, two new toolkits, aiming to increase EC access in developing countries, will be made available on PATH’s website: “Youth-friendly Pharmacy Program Implementation Kit,” and “Resources for ECP Programming: A Toolkit.”

For more information about PATH’s EC projects and to access PATH’s toolkits and other materials, please visit their website at www.path.org/projects/ec_featured_publications.php.
